MSU Basketball Coach Heading Home

STARKVILLE, MS (Ben Caxton) — Mississippi State women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer is returning to his native Texas. The move came two days after the Longhorns dismissed eight-year coach Karen Aston; she had only one losing season in her tenure and took the Longhorns to the Sweet 16 or farther four times. The 59-year old Schaefer inherits a program that went 19-11 last season but will lose four of its top six scorers next season. During his time in Starkville, the Bulldogs won 221 and lost 62 games. They were ranked number 9 with a 27 and 6 record before last season was cut short and the tournament canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
