MSDH Advises Pregnant Women: Don’’t Travel Where Zika is Prevalent

Chicot Memorial

(Jackson, MS) — Zika has been a hot topic of discussion lately with new cases seemingly popping up every day. Although this mosquito-borne virus has made its way to the U.S., the few cases reported here were transmitted through sexual contact. This virus may cause devastating birth defects if contracted during pregnancy, so the Mississippi State Department of Health advises pregnant women or women planning to get pregnant in the near future to avoid travel to countries with Zika transmission. There are no available treatments or vaccines for Zika virus. For more information on Zika, visit www.healthyMS.com/Zika.
