JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — Republicans have expanded their majority in the state legislature following Tuesday’s elections. Democrats lost 3 Senate seats to Republicans, who will control 60% of the seats in both chambers. GOP lawmakers can pass tax changes and borrowing bills without any Democratic votes. Mississippi’s legislature had the lowest percentage of women lawmakers of any state in the nation this year, at 13.8%. That will grow to 16.7% with five new women in the Senate and two in the House. Nationwide, 29% of state lawmakers are women.
