CLEVELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — Cleveland’s Octoberfest barbecue contest, the Mississippi Delta State Barbecue Championship, has received a $5,000 Smokin’ with Smithfield Grant. The grant allows Octoberfest organizers to deepen the prize purse of the top 20% of the field. Cleveland will celebrate its 35th annual Octoberfest on October 13th & 14th this year. Over 50 barbecue teams compete in a Memphis Barbecue Network sanctioned competition each year at the event. These include professional and amateur teams. The contest was named a State Championship by former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour. Over 15,000 attendees came to Octoberfest in Cleveland last year.
