Monday Greenwood Fire Is A Suspected Arson

GREENWOOD, MS (Ben Caxton) — Greenwood Fire Chief Marcus Banks thinks a Monday morning fire that spread to four buildings was no accident. Firefighters were called to a home at 606 Ave. G just before 4:00 AM Monday. By the time they arrived on scene, the fire had already spread to three other buildings and damaged the rear portion of a fifth. One of the structures is a total loss, and another suffered heavy damage. According to Banks, the fire and smoke were initially visible from the main fire station on Main Street and another station on Carrollton Avenue. Fire Marshal Victor Stokes is now in charge of the investigation but Banks told the Greenwood Commonwealth newspaper that it appears the fire was intentional and not accidentally started by someone trying to keep warm.
