Mississippi Unemployment At Historic Low

Chicot Memorial

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — Mississippi’s unemployment rate of 4.9% in May is the lowest it’s been since modern records began in 1979. The May figure is a .1% drop from April and a full 1% below the 5.9% unemployment rate measured in May of 2016 one year ago. The number of people in the labor force actually declined, but the losses were offset by an even faster rate of decline in the number of people seeking jobs. It’s unclear whether this indicates that more people found jobs or more people gave up looking for jobs and were not counted as unemployed. Nationally Mississippi’s unemployment rate is still much higher than the national average of 4.3%, ranking 7th highest of all states.
