Mississipi Held Earthquake Drill Thursday

MISSISSIPPI (Ben Caxton) — The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency encouraged people, especially schools and businesses, to participate Thursday in a statewide earthquake drill. During the Great Central U.S. Shakeout Earthquake Drill, participants were urged to practice what MEMA calls the three essential steps: Drop, take cover and hold on. Mississippi lies on the edge of the New Madrid fault zone which produced a series of powerful quakes in the early 1800s. In 2015, there were a series of small earthquakes that shook Madison County on a newly discovered fault line just south of Canton.
