Memorial Fund Created for Byhalia Football Player

BYHALIA, MS (Ben Caxton) — A memorial fund has been created in memory of Dennis Mitchell, the Byhalia football player who died Friday night in Clarksdale. Following a hard hit on the field, the 16-year old collapsed on the sidelines during Byhalia’s game against Coahoma County. He later died at the hospital. There was no athletic trainer on the field when Mitchell came out of the game and Byhalia principal James Kimbrough says the budget for athletic trainers at small schools is tight and many small schools don’t have one. Byhalia’s game against Center Hill this week will move to Byhalia so Mitchell’s teammates can honor him; visitation will be Friday in Holly Springs with memorial services Saturday at Byhalia High School. He will be buried in Memphis.
