Mcdonald’s Celebrating Big Mac Birthday with MacCoins

THE DELTA (Ben Caxton) — Some people believe that all fast food leads to high cholesterol, and shortened life expectancies. If that’s true then the McDonald’s BigMac, which turns a healthy 50 years old this week, seems completely unaffected. McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook said in a press release that the iconic burger has traversed the globe and is enjoyed in cities from Shanghai to Chicago providing what he called “delicious, feel-good moments” to people all over the world. McDonald’s is celebrating by creating what it calls a “global currency” that will come with, and then later be redeemable for, Big Mac burgers. McDonald’s is minting more than 6.2 million of the coins across 50 countries. There will be five different designs, in seven different languages, one for each of the five decades of the Big Mac. McDonald’s says 14,000 restaurants across the U.S. will participate in the promotion.
