Mayoral candidate murdered in Clarksdale

Police have confirmed that a body pulled from the Mississippi River is that of Marco McMillian, a mayoral candidate in Clarksdale. McMillian’s vehicle was involved in a crash Tuesday morning near the Coahoma-Tallahatchie county line on US 49. The drivers of both cars were hospitalized, and one of them allegedly confessed to the strangulation of McMillian. He was 34 years old and running for mayor because he said he wanted to help with crime and unemployment in Clarksdale. His campaign staff says McMillian was openly gay but that it had not been considered an issue during the campaign. Police have not yet discussed a possible motive for the murder.
