CLARKSDALE, MS (Ben Caxton) — In a front page story this week the Clarksdale Press-Register reports that Chuck Espy will be sworn in as Mayor next Thursday evening and will take office on July 3rd. The story says Espy hopes the first item on the agenda at his first city board meeting on the 10th will be repealing a Clarksdale ordinance prohibiting residents from parking on their lawns. He also will retain Cathy Clark as city clerk. In an announcement probably not featured prominently in his campaign promises, the new mayor says he hopes to find a place in his administration for his friend Dwan Brown, who was convicted in 2005 on two counts of bank fraud, sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay $1.9 million in restitution. Espy says Brown has paid his debt to society, and everyone deserves a second chance.
