CROSSETT, AR (Ben Caxton) — A massive fire at a closed Georgia-Pacific plywood mill in Crossett led to evacuations Sunday. The Crossett Fire Department began posting about the fire on Facebook shortly before 11:00 AM asking all residents to avoid the area. The area from First Avenue to Third Avenue along and near U.S. 82 were evacuated by the Crossett Police Department. The area includes multiple homes and businesses. Vehicles that were parked nearby had to be towed away. The blaze sent clouds of thick black smoke raining hot cinders and debris across the city. At least six fire departments battled the fire that was fed by debris at the mill which was in the process of being demolished, and high winds. The blaze was eventually brought under control Sunday afternoon.
