Marco McMillian’s family calls for hate crime investigation

Marco McMillian’s family has called for his recent murder to be investigated as a hate crime. McMillian was an openly gay candidate for mayor of Clarksdale, one of the first viable gay candidates to run for public office in Mississippi. His family members say they want a full investigation into whether he was the victim of a hate crime. The Coahoma County Sheriff’s office has said that it is not exploring that option. 22-year-old Lawrence Reed of Shelby is in custody facing murder charges, and an alleged motive is not clear at this point.
