Leland joins school funding lawsuit

The Leland School District has signed on with 14 other districts, including Greenville, in a lawsuit against the state that claims inadequate public education funding. The complaint filed in a Chancery Court in Hinds County alleges that the state has not lived up to the standards set by the Mississippi Adequate Education Program. It seeks both full funding in the future and past funding. The plaintiffs claim that the districts have been underfunded by a total of one and a half billion dollars since 2008. A luncheon at Leland City Hall this week aimed to raise awareness about the lawsuit.
