Leflore Supervisor Organizing Civil Rights Monument

LEFLORE COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — Leflore County may be getting a new “Civil Rights” monument on the courthouse grounds in Greenwood. At a Monday meeting, the County Board of Supervisors okayed a request by District 3 Supervisor Anjuan Brown to bring in a list of names to form a committee to help erect a monument to black history that would serve to counter the existing Confederate monument that stands on the southeast corner of the courthouse grounds. The idea was first proposed by Troy Brown Sr. and Troy Brown Jr. of Greenwood last month who asked the board’s approval for a citizen committee to plan it. The Browns have said if the board did not approve the second monument, they would ask that the existing Confederate monument be removed.
