Leflore County Sees Fifth Homicide Of 2018

LEFLORE COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — A fatal shooting in Leflore County in the wee hours of Monday morning marks the fifth homicide in the county this year, two of which occurred within the city of Greenwood itself. 34-year-old Demetrics Townsend left his vehicle shortly after midnight to retrieve his mail at the Bishop Apartments on Clay Avenue when he was shot multiple times. By a little after 1:00 AM Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders had declared Townsend dead at the scene. Police believe the shooter or shooters were on foot but have no suspects at this time. The apartment complex is near Amanda Elzy High School which has lost two teenage students to gun violence in what authorities describe as an ongoing gang turf war.
