Last Of Closed Mississippi Beaches Open Again

GULFPORT, MS (Ben Caxton) — As of Friday all 21 Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches are open to the public again after toxic algae blooms caused closures throughout the summer. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality says that as of late Friday they had lifted water contact warnings that were issued on August 6 along with the last of the advisories still in effect for Pass Christian Harbor, Long Beach Harbor and Bay St. Louis Harbor. Recent water sample results show that while the bloom was still present, many of the cells were dying. Officials say, however, that toxicity levels were all below the EPA guidelines set to protect public health.

  1. Good news: The beaches are finally opened.
    Bad news: Winter’s coming.

Why doesn’t the state create a huge reservoir to deal with the treacherous Mississippi River?
