Kellogg Foundation Gives $550,000 To Delta Music Institute

CLEVELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — The Delta Music Institute has received a $548,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The money is to extend its “Healing with a Groove” program. The program helps young Delta people of color create and produce original songs and recordings using the professional studios and equipment of the Institute and its Mobile Music Lab. DMI Director Tricia Walker says Mississippi is the birthplace of America’s music but also the repository of a complicated history regarding race, and the Institute seeks to address that. The program expects to help create up to 40 original songs and music works this year, all with the theme of promoting racial healing. Staff to assist the young music makers will be recruited from former participants in the program from Bolivar, Coahoma, Leflore, Sunflower and Washington counties.
