Just One Greenwood Charter School Application Left

GREENWOOD, MS (Ben Caxton) — Just one of two proposed charter schools in the Greenwood area are left under consideration after a decision Friday by a committee of the state’s Charter School Authorizer Board. After a consultant reported that MS Delta Academies proposal for Leflore Legacy Academy meets all of the state’s requirements, the three-member committee voted unanimously to send the license application to the full board for a final vote September 9. If approved, Leflore Legacy Academy plans to open it doors to about 120 sixth graders in its first year. MS Delta Academies had made an application for a license last year but was turned down by the state over curriculum concerns. Another Greenville applicant, Mississippi Community Education Center’s proposed K-5 school in Greenwood, was rejected, along with proposed schools in Canton, and Vicksburg.
