Jay-Z and Yo Gotti Suing Mississippi Prison Officials

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — Attorneys for rap artists Jay-Z and Yo Gotti are suing Mississippi prison officials on behalf of 29 inmates. The federal lawsuit filed Tuesday alleges prisoners in the state penitentiary at Parchman are kept in unconstitutional and inhumane conditions and claims Mississippi’s failure to fund its prisons has resulted in violence because the facilities are understaffed. The department of corrections is asking the legislature for $419 million, a 23% funding increase, for fiscal year 2021. That would include $22.5 million to renovate a housing unit at Parchman, raise the starting salary for correctional officers and fill 800 vacant positions.
