IRS Phone Scammers Active In Monticello

Chicot Memorial

MONTICELLO, AR (Ben Caxton) — Telephone scammers are making the rounds again in Monticello. Police Chief Eddy Deaton is warning that a number of people in the area have reported being contacted by scammers posing as IRS agents. The callers attempt to get their victims to give out personal financial information by suggesting they are owed a refund and need bank account numbers to transfer the money. Or, alternatively, claim back taxes must be paid immediately to avoid arrest or jail time and attempt to get the recipient to send money via a gift card or wire transfer. The scammers use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers and usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling.
