Hybrid & Electric Vehicles Owners Get Tax Notices

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — If you own a hybrid or electric vehicle in Mississippi by now you’ve received a new tax bill from the state. The Department of Revenue has sent out notices to all owners across the state of a new annual tax on their vehicles which took effect on October 1. The state wants owners to write a check to the treasury of $75 for hybrid vehicles and $150 for total electric vehicles every year from now on. The tax is in addition to regular tag fees and must be paid at vehicle registration or renewal. Legislators have earmarked the receipts to go towards the state’s highway and transportation funds. Lawmakers opted for the tax in special session this year as an alternative to raising the state’s 18 cents per gallon gas tax.
