Health officials are pleased at how Mississippi fared during mosquito season this year

The state confirmed 45 cases of the mosquito-borne West Nile Virus this year, a significant improvement over the 247 cases confirmed in 2012. But health officials say the real number may be higher, since not everyone seeks medical treatment for their symptoms and the state only counts cases that were confirmed in a lab. This year, there were five fatal cases of West Nile, including one involving an elderly resident of Shelby. The official mosquito season has concluded, but health officials urge precautions against mosquito bites year-round.
