Gulf Coast Moonshine Operation Shut Down

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — Agents from the state Department of Revenue’s Alcoholic Beverage Control division have shut down a large moonshine operation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Agents found 20 barrels of fermenting mash and nearly 300 gallons of moonshine plus hundreds of pounds of raw materials including corn and sugar near Kiln. Moonshine sells for about $20 per gallon on the Gulf Coast and can fetch as much as $50 a gallon elsewhere in the state. Possession of untaxed whiskey is a misdemeanor in Mississippi and distilling it is a felony.
