Guilty Plea in Murder Of Yazoo Businessman

YAZOO CITY, MS (Ben Caxton) — A Mississippi man plead guilty Thursday in the 2013 death of a Yazoo businessman. Johnny Mack Brown had been charged with second-degree murder, armed robbery, possession of a gun by a convicted felon and criminal conspiracy. He was sentenced Thursday after his plea to 26 years in prison. Brown says he and his wife lured 56-year-old Ricky Saxton to a rural road near Benton, falsely claiming they wanted to sell Saxton a car. There, Brown tried to rob Saxton and shot him multiple times in the back of the head when Saxton tried to run. Brown says he sought to rob Saxton because he needed rent money. Brown’s first trial resulted in a mistrial because the defense had not provided Brown’s attorneys with an investigator’s report. The retrial had been scheduled to begin next week.
