Guilty Plea Expected in 2016 Murder Of Nuns

KOSCIUSKO, MS (Ben Caxton) — The man charged with killing two 68-year old nuns in 2016 will plead guilty as part of an agreement that removes the possibility of the death penalty. Rodney Earl Sanders of Kosciusko will be sentenced to life without parole for killing Sisters Margaret Held and Paula Merrill. The nuns were nurse practitioners and were found stabbed to death in August of 2016 at their home in Durant after failing to show up for work at a health clinic in nearby Lexington, where they often treated poor and uninsured patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions. The clinic and the nuns’ home are in Holmes County where 44 percent of the residents live in poverty. According to the US Census Bureau Holmes is the seventh-poorest county in America.
