Greenwood Midway Hotel Demolition on Hold for Court Hearing

GREENWOOD, MS (Ben Caxton) — Demolition of the Midway Hotel in Greenwood is on hold after the owner filed suit against the city late last week. The city council voted several weeks ago to demolish the structure saying it was a hazard. Streets along the east side of the building have been closed off by the city as a safety precaution for some time. Now the owner, Larry “Blue” Neal is appealing that decision. Papers filed by Neal dispute claims by a structural engineer hired by the city that the building on Carrollton Avenue is unrepairable, and says that Neal plans to renovate the building into a veterans home. No action can be taken on the demolition until the city responds and a court date has been set and a decision rendered.
