Greenwood Donating $10,000 to Plane Crash Victim Families

GREENWOOD, MS (Ben Caxton) — The City of Greenwood is donating $10,000 to help defray transportation and lodging costs of up to 100 family members of last year’s military plane crash when they visit for an event planned in mid-July. The weekend of July 13th thropugh 15th has been set aside by the Marine Corp League of Mississippi to dedicate a new $80,000 memorial near Itta Bena to the victims. 15 Marines and one Navy corpsman died in the accident on July 10, 2017. The new memorial is being erected across from Mississippi Valley State University, where rescue and recovery operations by the military and local first responders took place after the crash. Marines will start a 900-mile volksmarch carrying rucksacks filled with dirt from the crash site to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina where seven of the victims were based.
