GREENWOOD, MS (Ben Caxton) — A Greenwood 6-year-old is in critical condition in a Jackson hospital after being shot. The boy underwent emergency surgery Monday evening at the University of Mississippi Medical Center after allegedly being shot by a playmate earlier in the day. Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore told the Greenwood Commonwealth newspaper that family members have said that the child “seems to be holding his own,” and has been moved into a pediatric intensive care unit. The child’s name has not been released. Authorities say they responded to a call from the child’s aunt Monday at 3:12 p.m. that someone had been shot inside of a home in the 400 block of Kinney Street. When officers arrived on the scene, medical help had already arrived and were treating a child that had been shot in the abdomen. The Greenwood Police Chief said three children inside the home during the time of the shooting, One of the children, a 5-year-old boy, went to get his shoes and socks out from under a couch when he found a loaded .40-caliber handgun. The child was playing with the gun when it discharged and shot the 6-year-old. Police are still investigating to determine to whom the gun belonged.
