The Greenville City Council is making preparations for February’s high-profile Mississippi River Marathon by agreeing to suspend a city ordinance banning alcoholic beverages in open containers in public for the event. Councilman Tommy Benson was opposed and argued the council should make a decision on whether to keep the ordinance or remove it from the books, rather than suspending it for specific events. The suspension will allow attendees of the River Marathon event on February 9th to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages during the festivities.
