Greenville Casino Gambling Champion Dead At 86

GREENVILLE, MS (Ben Caxton) — A former Mississippi lawmaker who helped open the way for casino gambling has died. H.L. “Sonny” Merideth Jr. of Greenville served in the Mississippi House from 1960 to 1992. In 1990 he was chairman of a House Ways and Means subcommittee and amended a bill to allow gambling on riverboats docked along the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast. Merideth died Tuesday in Florida. He was 86.
