GREENVILLE, MS (Ben Caxton) — A late morning Greenville bank heist ended in a shootout with police in Tunica, and the suspect in a Memphis hospital. Police were called to the Southern Bancorp branch yesterday shortly before noon where employees told them the bank had just been robbed. A lone black man entered the branch on Highway 1 South in Greenville with a handgun and demanded money. He fled on foot toward the rear of the Kroger’s grocery store with an undetermined amount of cash in hand. Greenville police then alerted other area law enforcement agencies that the getaway vehicle was believed to be a maroon Chevrolet SUV. Cleveland Police spotted the vehicle and gave chase, eventually ending up in Tunica where authorities say police exchanged gunfire with the robber who was injured in the shootout. The suspect, who has not yet been named, was transported to a Memphis hospital for treatment. Highway 61 south of Highway 4 in Tunica County was closed while authorities investigated the scene Wednesday afternoon.
