SHAW, MS (Ben Caxton) — One person is in custody after a baby was found dead inside a kitchen. Emergency crews received a call to a home on Martin Luther Drive in Shaw around 7:00 PM Monday evening. On arrival, they found a 20-month old baby girl that had been stabbed, placed in a heated oven, and baked. The child’s grandmother has been arrested and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the crime. Bolivar County Sheriff Kelvin Williams Sr. said 48-year-old Carolyn Jones was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Royalty Marie Floyd. Jones made her initial court appearance Tuesday evening where a judge set bail at $500,000. The baby’s body has been taken to the state crime lab in Jackson where a state pathologist will have to determine if the baby died before being placed in the oven. A similar case in Greenville seven years ago sent Terri Robinson to prison. In that case the coroner determined that the toddler died of heat-related injuries from being in the oven.
