Governor Bryant is proposing a 4.4 million dollar payment for hospitals across Mississippi

The payment is meant to offset the expected loss of federal funds after the Affordable Care Act goes into effect. The hospitals will gradually lose most governmental reimbursement for treating people who don’t have health insurance, since the law is designed to result in more people having health insurance. The Governor remains opposed to an expansion in the state’s medicaid program, which he says would result in either tax increases or reductions in other state services.
