Former Ole Miss Student Pleads Guilty

(Oxford, MS) — A former University of Mississippi student pleaded guilty Thursday to placing a noose around the neck of the school’s statue of civil rights activist, James Meredith. 21-year-old Austin Reed Edenfield walked out of court a free man pending sentencing on July 21. Edenfield faces up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine. The government has recommended probation. Another former student, Graeme Phillip Harris pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor charge and was sentenced to six months in prison followed by 12 months’ supervised release. He is scheduled to be released July 1.
