Floodgates Finally Open at Steele Bayou

VICKSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — The flood gates have finally been opened at Steele Bayou to start draining water that’s built up behind the flood control structure. Water levels on the Mississippi until now have been too high to release the trapped water which has inundated many areas behind the dam. On the first of several attempts, Monday engineers decided water on the Mississippi River side was still actually higher than inside. By later in the day though it became apparent that water was actually starting to drain from the backwater into the main channel where it will eventually flow into the Gulf of Mexico.
