Fleeing Suspect Shot and Killed Near Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, AR (AP) — A car chase that started when Arkansas Sheriff’s deputies spotted a wanted man ended with one of the suspects fatally shot near Pine Bluff. According to Arkansas State Police a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy attempted to detain 40-year-old Matthew Abrams of Pine Bluff and question him about recent criminal activity. Abrams and another person fled the scene in a car with the deputy in pursuit. When the car became stuck on a railroad track the two bailed from the car and took off running on foot. The second suspect was apprehended. But Abrams was injured in a shootout with deputies and continued away on foot. Officers with the Arkansas Department of Correction used search dogs to later find Abrams, who authorities say refused orders to drop his gun and was fatally shot by correction officers.
