First day of local Circuit Court arrives

Circuit Court returns to Washington County today. A grand jury will be formed as the Circuit Court begins its seven-week session today. The grand jury will consist of the first 25 qualified individuals, who will be asked whether various defendants should be indicted. They will make that determination for about 40 cases per week for each of the seven weeks of the session. Four judges will preside. They include Ashley Hines of Greenville, Betty Sanders of Greenwood, Margaret McCray of Greenville and Richard Smith of Greenwood. Some of the indictments will conclude with plea deals while others will be scheduled for trial.
