FBI Special Agent Looking into Prison Problems

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — The special agent in charge of the FBI’s Jackson Division and Mississippi’s two U.S. attorneys are looking into problems in the state prison system and have asked people to provide information if they know of civil rights violations or criminal activity. They did not say how extensive a federal investigation might be. Five inmates were killed and others were injured in violent outbursts between December 29 and January 3. Following damage during the unrest, hundreds of prisoners were moved to different units at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. 375 inmates were later moved to a private prison in Tallahatchie County.
