Fate Of Jackson Schools in Phil Bryant’s Hands

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — The fate of Jackson’s public school district is in the hands of Governor Phil Bryant, and on Monday students gathered on the steps of Jackson City Hall to protest the proposed state takeover. A Mississippi Department of Education audit of the state’s second-largest school district shows the district violated more than two-thirds of MDE’s process standards, part of the reason a state takeover has been suggested. Among student concerns is a fear that a state takeover would mean cuts to extra-curricular activities. There’s no word on when the Governor may sign off on a state takeover.
