Espy Wants Minority Firms to Head Clarksdale Projects

CLARKSDALE, MS (Ben Caxton) — Clarksdale Mayor Chuck Espy has called for equality among contractors that work for the city. At Monday’s board meeting after consultant Bill Coker advised the mayor and commissioners that new water and wastewater equipment had been ordered to complete work on the city’s sewer project, Espy noted that while some minority firms have worked as subcontractors, no minority firms have been hired as a lead contractor. Coker said that WGK Engineering has verbally promised to use minority-owned firms on the grant-funded project. Espy responded that the city should get that commitment in writing.
