Emmett Till Marker Rededication Ceremony Tuesday

GREENWOOD, MS (Ben Caxton) — A rededication of a historical marker in honor of Emmett Till has been scheduled for Tuesday. Dr. Leslie-Burl McLemore, professor emeritus of political science at Jackson State University and a member of the Mississippi Freedom Trail Task Force, will preside over the re-dedication at Bryant’s Grocery on Money Road in Greenwood at 10:00 AM. Till, 14-years-old at the time of his death, was kidnapped and murdered in Money, Mississippi in 1955 after being accused of whistling at a white woman while visiting his family. Someone scratched the marker in May, and at the end of June another vandal peeled off the back, which featured photos of Till. Last year a marker at the site of the teen’s death was found riddled with bullet holes. The civil rights marker outside the former grocery store was erected in 2011.
