El Dorado Sawmill Closing Two Years After $80M Upgrade

EL DORADO, AR (Ben Caxton) — Two years ago Conifex Timber announced it was spending $80 million to renovate and restart the old Georgia pacific sawmill in Eldorado. Yesterday they announced the mill will close anyway within the next sixty days throwing its 92 employees out of work. The company’s CEO says lumber prices are too modest to justify continued operations at the site but held out the hope that they may eventually be able modernize and reopen the plant in the future.
