Delta State Professor Dies in Leland Traffic Accident

LELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — A Delta State University Professor was killed in a weekend traffic accident in Leland. 51-year-old Cheryl Cummins and her husband Mark Cummins were traveling on US Highway 82 around 8:00 PM Saturday when their car was struck head-on by another vehicle driven by 54-year-old Samuel Ford. The crash caused both cars to roll over and land in a ditch near Ayers-Delta Implement. Reports indicate that Ford was driving the wrong way when it struck the Cummins’ vehicle. Cheryl Cummins, Director of Field Experiences at the University died at the scene. Her husband, an aircraft repair technician and inspector in Delta State’s commercial aviation program, is reported in good condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Ford, the driver of the other vehicle is also hospitalized. His condition is not known at this time. Leland police continue to investigate the accident.
