Dam Breach Washes Cars Off Highway 49

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — Cars were swept from Highway 49 in Rankin County Friday night as a wall of water rolled across the roadway after a dam break. Authorities say that about 10:13 PM a 130-foot section of a lake dam by Piney Woods School collapsed, emptying the lake in minutes, and in the process sending a waist-high tsunami of water rolling across the roadway. First responders found the highway covered in debris including two disabled cars with their occupants inside. The five-acre lake constructed in the 1930s was up to 20 feet deep in places. The highway and nearby railroad tracks have been inspected for damage and declared safe and the highway is again open to traffic.
