Cpu Discusses Legality Of Paying the Chamber Of Commerce

CLARKSDALE, MS (Ben Caxton) — At Tuesday’s meeting the Clarksdale Public Utilities board approved advertising requests from the Delta Blues Museum and the Sunflower River Blues and Gospel festival but tabled a request from the Clarksdale/Coahoma County Chamber of Commerce. In the past CPU has paid $17,500 for membership plus $3000 to sponsor Friday at the Stage and other chamber events, but in a letter to the board director Jon Levingston asked for a $14,000 increase from CPU in the next fiscal year – $4000 for additional advertising and $10,000 to support the chamber’s efforts to recruit industry to Clarksdale. The matter was tabled after board members questioned the legality of payments to the chamber of commerce, and CPU commissioners discussed personnel and litigation matters in executive session.
