CPU Board Installing Weather Station In Downtown Clarksdale

CLARKSDALE, MS (Ben Caxton) — At yesterday’s meeting of the Clarksdale Public Utilities board, commissioners voted to spend $3500 to sponsor of next month’s Juke Joint Festival and another $1500 for the installation of a downtown weather station on the CPU administration building. The board also approved general manager Mark Johnson’s request to hire two part-time meter readers to work Saturdays through the end of June; choosing his words carefully, Johnson said that Baker Engineering is meeting the minimum requirements of their contract to read meters and during the transition to AMI electric meters wanted to be sure that readings are accurate and bills get processed on time. In 2015 CPU meter readers fell two weeks behind; approximately 4700 AMI electric meters have been installed so far. Financial officer Steve Reed also reported that CPU customers continue to use alternate payment options. Over 5000 customers paid their bills through the cdpu.net website or at the 24-hour kiosk last month, representing over $28,000 in revenue for the utility.
