Confederate Statue Relocation Debates Continue

McComb, MS (Ben Caxton) — Officials in one Mississippi city continue debating over whether they can move a century-old Confederate monument. The city of McComb has obtained two quotes for how much it would cost to move the monument from City Hall to a cemetery in Magnolia where some Confederate soldiers are buried. The lowest quote was $31,000 and McComb’s mayor supports moving the monument but wants private donors to pay for it. Many Mississippi communities have Confederate statues and the state attorney general’s office has issued opinions stating such monuments could be moved to other public property, but McComb’s city attorney says the opinion is not legally binding.
