OXFORD, MS (Ben Caxton) — A pickup truck hit and damaged a decorative extension of a Confederate memorial’s base Saturday night but apparently it was an accident. Police said the driver and passenger were taken to a hospital after the crash on the Ole Miss campus and the driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. A plaque providing context for the statue was knocked loose and because a Confederate statue was involved, the FBI was called to ensure every angle was covered although there is no indication it was a deliberate act.
