Cleveland Meeting Tonight To Discuss DSU Golf Course

CLEVELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — A group of Cleveland residents will meet at 6:00 pm tonight at Mississippi Consignment Sales on Mississippi Highway 8 East to discuss possible ways of keeping the Delta State University golf course open. The public is invited, especially avid golfers and those who live or own property around the course. Delta State announced last week that in light of budget cuts the course would be closed effective June 30. The closure will translate into nearly $250,000 in savings for the university, which is needed to offset $1.1 million in state budget cuts from this fiscal year alone. Although no official plan to repurpose the course has been announced, university officials have made no secret of the fact that given permission under state law they hope to explore renting the 55-acre tract for mixed development in the future to generate additional revenue for the school.
